Things to do
There’s plenty to do in Sitges all year around! Mild temperatures throughout the year attract visitors from all over the world. Whether you’re into spending all day at the beach, enjoying local and international cuisine, partying all night long, immersing yourself in cultural events, going for a hike, shopping or simply enjoying a sundowner while watching the crowds walk by – Sitges does all of that and much more!
Beach enthusiasts
Sitges boasts a stunning promenade along dozens of beaches along the coast. For beach enthusiasts, there’s plenty of beaches to choose from: A city beach right in the center of the town, a sports beach with beach volley nets and the Club Nautic, a family beach, a surfer beach, a gay beach for the queer crowd and friends next to Calipolis, a more quiet and laid back beach close to Terramar, a natural beach between the cemetery and the Aiguadolç port, a hard-to-get-by pebble beach hidden between the rocks to the south – just to mention a few.
To find your favorite spot, do as the locals do and choose the right beach for the day and see for yourself how each beach has its own character and attracts a different crowd.
Culture buffs
When Sitges was still a small fishing village, writers and artists fell in love with the charming and relaxed town. Art and literature flourished and were to become an integral part of the town’s character. Today the legacy of this bohemian spirit is still visible in architecture, design and decorative arts. To admire some of the best artistic showpieces and learn more about Sitges’ history, visit the Museu Maricel and Museu Cau Ferrat (to be jointly visited) located at the historic center only a few steps from the iconic Saint Bartomeu church. If you’re more interested in architecture, you will love visiting the Palau de Maricel with breathtaking panoramic views of the sea and beautifully decorated rooftops.
Make sure to check the calendar before you arrive, Sitges is well-known for celebrations and events that make the town one of the most vibrant beach resorts in the Mediterranean: The Sitges carnival (February / March), the Flower Festival (June), Sitges Gay Pride (June), the Fiesta Major (August), Gay Bears Week (September), Wine Festival (October) and of course the world-famous Sitges International Film Festival (October).
Sporty people
If you’re into sports, Sitges has got you covered. The best spot for walking and jogging is clearly the promenade that stretches along the popular town beaches from the church towards Terramar to the south. For some serious hiking (and mountain-biking) however head for the trails of Parc del Garraf in the mountains between Sitges and Barcelona with its wild Mediterranean landscape and spectacular vantage points along the coast. The coastal path beyond Terramar leading towards Vilanova i la Geltrù in the south also offer excellent trails with plenty of opportunities for a quick jump into the sea.
Of course swimming is primarily done in the sea. For an alternative, the Club Natació Sitges sits right on the beach and is not only a swimming club, but offers a tennis court too. The Club de Golf Terramar is located at the southern end of the town and offers an 18-hole course with breathtaking views of the coast. If you cannot go without a gym session, head over to the fully equipped state-of-the-art gym at Sorlisport a few steps from parc Can Robert.
Nightlife lovers
Sitges is a relatively small town, especially compared to its big sister Barcelona nearby. Still there are plenty of nightlife options for those who like to spend the night out and about. There are plenty of bars to choose from, the best way to navigate Sitges is to explore the narrow streets between the Plaça de Cap de la Vila and the ocean. Follow the crowds up and down Carrer de les Parellades and Carrer Major for bars and restaurants and sneak off into the side streets to discover more intimate spots. A major part of Sitges nightlife is dedicated to the gay and queer crowd – walk along Carrer Montroig to find the epicenter of gay nightlife.
Just make sure you don’t turn up too early, most bars and clubs tend to get busy only later in the night, typically after midnight.
Wine connoisseurs
For wine connoisseurs, a visit to some of the lovely wineries near Sitges is a must. Take a trip through the beautiful landscape of the Penedès region and visit the wineries that produce the cherished wines and cavas of the region. The Penedès wine region sites on the outskirts of Barcelona stretched between mountains and sea. A little bit of research before visiting will pay off, some wineries offer wine tastings, the opportunity to stroll through a vineyard, exquisite gourmet lunches, or visits to the underground caves where the wines and cavas are actually produced.
If you prefer to take a guided tour, there are a number of locally organized tasting tours with passionate guides that will share their inside knowledge of wines and cavas and make sure this will be an unforgettable experience for you.
